DP2 Multi-Purpose Support Vessel
BERTHA B is a 60 x 15 m DP2-classed and FIFI-1 certified OSV providing year-round offshore support and emergency response services under a long-term contract with Enagás. In 2026, the vessel has completed a major diesel-electric conversion, integrating propulsion and power generation into a new, highly efficient and redundant electrical architecture. The upgrade significantly improves efficiency, DP performance and operational reliability, extending BERTHA B’s capabilities and useful life for demanding long-term offshore operations.

Optimized for operational efficiency
In 2026, BERTHA B completed a comprehensive upgrade of her propulsion, power generation and energy management systems. The former mechanically driven propulsion architecture was replaced by an integrated diesel-electric system featuring variable speed electrically driven azimuth and tunnel thrusters with optimized power management.
The new configuration allows onboard power generation to continuously adapt to actual operational demand, substantially improving efficiency during stand-by and DP operations while increasing redundancy, propulsion control and overall operational reliability.
The result is a technically renewed and more efficient asset, specifically optimized for the vessel’s real operating profile while retaining the flexibility required for future offshore projects.
Role in the Gaviota project
La Gaviota is a former offshore gas production facility converted into a strategic natural gas storage platform, managed by Enagás. Situated 8 km off Bermeo (Bizkaia), it plays a critical role in Spain’s energy security by providing seasonal storage capacity and demand peak management. Since 2022, BERTHA B has ensured uninterrupted offshore support for the platform. She remains on station 24/7 near the platform, departing only for scheduled fortnightly port calls to Bermeo.
Track record & performance
Following completion of her 2026 conversion, the vessel has returned to operations at the Gaviota facility with a significantly upgraded technical platform. The new propulsion and power architecture reinforces BERTHA B’s ability to provide reliable 24/7 offshore support throughout the remaining life of the current contract and beyond.
